Sorrow/Sadness Sketches

In my Illustration class we have the theme of sorrow or sadness. I've chosen to illustrate two separate ideas. The first is a conceptual piece and I'm not going to tell you what it's about because I want to see if you can guess it's theme or what concept I'm trying to illustrate. I'd like to see what you guys think it's about! My second idea is pretty straight-forward. Two fishes are separated at the store and the beautiful one has been bought and they must say their "adieus".

Keep in mind these are still in the rough stage. Comments are always welcome!

I love the second one, the first says drought, lost harvest or a wilting soul in a field of growth, oh I'm not sure, that's all I've got!

Those are pretty close guesses actually! The shape of the vase and the dead plants are significant as well as the type of birds that are flying in the background.

You do great work Stephen.

From the shape of the vase and dead plants it looks like you are trying to say she is barren or had a miscarriage?? The birds look like seagulls which represent freedom. She has lost her freedom to have happiness? Just a guess. Dang, I don't know! :) Sorry I posted anonymous last time. Hit the wrong key.

You almost got it perfectly! It's a conceptual illustration about infertility or miscarriage. The only thing is that they are storks, not seagulls. So you can see how storks apply to the concept more than seagulls do. (Storks are where babies come from haha) When I actually paint it it will be more obvious that they are storks. Thanks for commenting! (I fixed your anonymous post)

Cool. I wasn't sure if they were seagulls or not. Dang...this piece would have applied to me perfectly a few years ago. Maybe that's why I got it?

I did go and ask members of my family to see if they had any idea, alas I've returned to find it revealed :-) Really an impressive piece, thank you, I'm glad I got to enjoy trying to figure it out too!

The fish are really coming along nicely. I love them. I like that you added the net and less plant haha.
And on the barren piece, I really enjoy the concept and the changes you've made to it so far. It's definitely improved leaps and bounds
